CLASSES

Contrary to popular opinion, Salsa is a very different dance to the other Latin dances. It is a Latin-American social dance that is often highly improvised and danced by lead and follow. Rather than needing to know routines with hours of preparation, this style can be danced in the moment and is enjoyed socially in many places. This means that two salsa dancers can dance without ever learning a routine or have needed to dance together before.
The society offers Beginner, Technique and Improver classes - these take place on Tuesdays. This year they will be taught by Angus Peters and his team, check out Abanico Salsa for more information on Angus' amazing team. We are so excited to have the pleasure of him teaching our society this year! They will also be teaching Workshops in different styles such as Bachata, Pachanga, Merengue and Social Cha Cha.
There are many opportunities to dance Salsa socially in Exeter, with regular events happening at Timepiece and Bar Venezia which our members will often visit. Additional salsa nights and workshops sometimes occur at Moose Hall and the Corn Exchange.
Join our Salsa Facebook page for more details and to keep up to date on local events.
For any questions on Salsa, don't be afraid to contact our Salsa Reps Anna Middlewick and Lizzie Wallbridge.
For details on the different levels we offer, our great teacher has written a description:
"BEGINNER - open to all, we cover the basic steps, timing and connections that you will need to move on. Once you have done 2-3 weeks at this level and you are happy with all the steps you are ready for the next level - Technique.
TECHNIQUE - we work on a 6 week rotation that covers all of the essential moves & techniques that you need for all of the levels above (you can join/move up any week in the rotation). At this level we include Cross Body Lead, Open Break, left turns, right turns, travelling turns, Changing Places, footwork & more - N.B. we also often base the Improver level class on the move/technique covered in this level so the 2 classes go hand in hand each evening.
IMPROVER - here we put together turn patterns using the following:- moves & techniques learnt at previous level- variations on technique level moves- new content (new moves & footwork etc)

The Society offers classes in Latin American & Ballroom dancing, giving you the chance to learn the Cha Cha, Jive, Samba, Rumba and Paso Doble in the Latin classes and Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot, Tango and Viennese Waltz in the Ballroom.
Our professional instructor Cheryl Beresford is on hand to help you learn steps, routines, posture and refine your technique to improve your dancing ability.
Our Beginners classes are aimed at those with no previous experience and all are welcome. Many members choose to join the University DanceSport team and compete with us, however this is not compulsory and others simply come to learn socially. There is no need to bring a partner - although you're welcome to. Shoes and clothes should be something you feel you can move and dance in, no speciality shoes are required.
We also run a Novice & Intermediate class which is aimed at those who know most of the steps and are reasonably confident with the dance technique. Whilst it is not a requirement, the majority of this class will compete with the team.
