  FAQ

How do I pay for Dancesport classes?

We ask everyone to arrive about 10 minutes before their class in order to pay by cash. Money is paid to our Treasurer Karolina. If you are interested in becoming a member of the society for reduced lesson costs, you can visit the Dancesport page on the Exeter Student Guild website and pay online: https://www.exeterguild.org/societies/dancesport/

Please be aware that memberships to the society are only available to Exeter students.

What should I wear for class?

At Dancesport we are quite relaxed about clothing during practices, as long as you feel that you can move easily and freely. We advise not to wear shoes with lots of grip, as this will prevent spinning.

We will be giving more information about shoes during the term. As beginners you may want to wait a while before paying for proper dance shoes. The committee will be open for questions about advice on buying latin and ballroom shoes.

Is extra training time available?

Every week our President will write times for Team Training on the newsletter. Extra training is completely free and is a great opportunity to practice with your partner closer to competitions or shows. It is non-obligitary and please ask committee if you are interested in attending.

Are your teachers qualified?

Yes! Both Angus, our salsa teacher, and Cheryl, our latin and ballroom teacher, are certified dance teachers. More information about their qualifications can be found here.

Can we still join your classes after the term has started?

Of course. Please read about how the salsa lessons work here

It is also possible to attend latin and ballroom classes during the term. Our classes work on a rota, so every week we do a different dance before repeating. When we go back to a dance, we may go a bit more advanced with it, but nothing to complicated that you couldn't pick it up again!

Every week our President Kerry posts a newsletter with what dances will be taught that week, and general useful reminders about the society- join our FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/exeteruniversitydancesport/

Can you perform for outside events?

DanceSport have their own dance squad that is available for hire and we will be performing in and around the local community. If you are interested, whether you are a society at Exeter or a group outside the university, please contact our President Kerry at km501@exeter.ac.uk.

Do I need to bring a partner?

No. In salsa, we tend to switch partners, so we move round in a circle and you will be able to dance with different people. During latin and ballroom classes, if you don't already have a partner, you can partner up with another person in the class. If there aren't enough people then a member of committee will step in.
